  • Short cycling: The furnace starts, runs a minute or two, shuts off, then fires back up again. A struggling motor can’t move air fast enough, so the system’s safety controls shut it down before it overheats.
  • Rising energy bills with no clear reason: A motor that’s losing efficiency has to work harder to move the same amount of air and that shows up on your utility bill.
  • The burning smell or the furnace won’t start at all: This is usually the last stage of the same wear pattern that showed up earlier as noise or weak airflow. At this point, shut the furnace off and call for an inspection.
